Curtin aims to improve organisational capability and performance by investing in developing our employees through various activites.

We want to inspire you to share Curtin’s 2020 vision of becoming a leading global university. In order to do that we are focused on creating opportunities to develop your personal and professional leadership skills and empower you to innovate and excel.

Career development is a joint investment taking into account your needs and those of your work area. It’s important to develop a career plan through career conversations with your manager and participate in development activities, either personally or as part of your work environment. While it is your responsibility to build skills and develop career prospects, we can provide support within the context of your existing role.

We encourage you to take the lead in advancing your career and discuss your current and future development needs with your manager.

Applying for development opportunities

Applications for staff development opportunities are considered for approval based on a number of factors:

is there relevance and alignment with your role as identified in career conversations and/or position description, as well as future career aspirations;
what benefits do you anticipate in terms of developing, maintaining or improving your employment related skills, knowledge and capabilities?
are there any professional accreditation requirements?
is there an anticipated benefit to the school/area/university taking into account present and future capability requirements and succession planning?
is there an impact on the immediate work area and its ability to continue meeting operational needs?
is there available budget within the school/area?
is there a level of joint investment?

The approval of staff development opportunities remains at Curtin’s discretion through the line manager’s recommendation and delegated authority approval.

For academic staff, allocations for professional development activities are recorded under ‘Block’ in the Academic Workload Management System (AWMS).

70/20/10 Model

In the past few years there has been an increasing awareness of the value of learning and development occurring primarily through experiences on the job. This is commonly referred to as the 70/20/10 model which represents a combination of informal and formal learning methods.

The model shows:

70% of learning is experiential i.e. occurring through job experience, daily tasks and practice
20% of learning is social through other people i.e. coaching, mentoring and feedback
10% of learning is formal through education and training

We encourage leaders to utilise the 70/20/10 model to guide career and development conversations.

Examples of development considerations using the model are provided in the table below:

70%	What opportunities can be provided on the job to develop, practice and embed the learning required? How can you make space for experimenting and providing feedback to make the development stick?
20%	How can you leverage networks to provide mentoring coaching and support? Who demonstrates the required knowledge/skill proficiently that can give guidance outside of existing line management?
10%	What quality training opportunities are available to develop the required knowledge or skill?
